Handmade Traveler’s Journal

Mixed media means anything goes. Any material, art supply, household supply, tool, machine and much more can be used to create with. For this traveler’s notebook style journal I made for my son, I started with a piece of blind material. Samples of blind fabric can often be purchased for a few dollars at a curtain shop. Dan wanted the cover ‘grunged up a bit’ so I distressed the fabric with inks and acrylic paint. I stamped on his name and heat embossed the letters.

The inside is lined with a piece of scrapbook paper that I tore and stitched over. I love using my sewing machine in mixed media and I used a combination of straight and zigzag stitches to continue the grungy look. It has two flaps inside front and back for holding business cards or whatever.

A couple of embellishments and a strip of leather has been added for decoration. They are joined to the hat elastic used to hold the inserts.

There are three signatures of cut and folded photocopy paper that can easily be replaced when used up.
