A Spontaneous SMS tutorial

My sister has just started mixed media. She has always been a creative soul but like many of us has had to wait until the right door opened to be free enough to embrace her desire to do art. This tutorial was a series of images and brief prompts I sent her one evening on sms.  I was painting and she was at her house contemplating how to start. I hope you give it a try too! This is not …

Frida or not?

Most mixed media artists love the work of Frida Kahlo. The vibrancy and strength she had to live a physically difficult life and the challenges she faced as a creative are an inspiration to many. The Artsisters asked if I would show them how I painted my Frida with flowing up hair filled with flowery paper and napkin collage. This technique is familiar to many mixed media artists. Filling the journal page with collage, drawing in the image, in this …

Waxworks

encaustic adjective : a paint made from pigment mixed with melted beeswax and resin and after application fixed by heat; also : the method involving the use of encaustic or a work produced by this method   These are a selection of some of my encaustic mixed media experimental artworks. Using melted beeswax mixed with damar resin as a medium is very satisfying and forgiving. If something isn’t working it just gets melted again. There is an art to this technique and I have only …

Upcycled

When your garage is full of empty containers and you just can’t find one the exact size, you upcycle! You find the exact piece of cardboard packaging, like a laptop box and go for it. You grab a pile of your favourite book pages for collage… ..and cover up all the graphics. You get out paints… …and stencils and you are on a roll. Give the edges a good load of distressing. (I love this giant sponge I just bought …

Sisters

I’ve been thinking about my sisters a lot lately. Actually I only have one real sister and I have been thinking a lot about her too.  Artsisters are a group of creative ladies who have been hanging around together for a little while now in my life. We have been creating mixed media together in various places and lately our numbers have increased. My real sister has joined in too. We have three pairs of sisters in our tribe …

Handmade Traveler’s Journal

Mixed media means anything goes. Any material, art supply, household supply, tool, machine and much more can be used to create with. For this traveler’s notebook style journal I made for my son, I started with a piece of blind material. Samples of blind fabric can often be purchased for a few dollars at a curtain shop. Dan wanted the cover ‘grunged up a bit’ so I distressed the fabric with inks and acrylic paint. I …

Nature Teabag Art

A used teabag really has so much life left. It makes a wonderful printed image when placed to dry on a piece of watercolour paper. When dry and the tealeaves are removed, there is a small piece of fine paper with delicate naturally made markings. It is ready to use for collage or to draw on. The tealeaves themselves have potential as natural earthy ‘glitter’ waiting to be sprinkled as a finishing touch on a piece of artwork. This …
